ANNIVERSARIES

2008-Yes cancel their 40th anniversary tour due to singer Jon Anderson’s respiratory problems. He was hospitalized in May after suffering a severe asthma attack and has been told to not work for at least six months. Later in the year Chris Squire, Alan White and Steve Howe will hire an Anderson sound-alike and go on tour.

2004-Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival begins at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. The charity event also features John Mayer, Buddy Guy, Jeff Beck, Z-Z Top, Carlos Santana, B-B King, Joe Walsh, James Taylor, Jimmie Vaughan and many more.

2003-Led Zeppelin’s How the West Was Won debuts on top of the album chart with just over 154-thousand copies its first week in stores. The accompanying D-V-D, on sales of just under 120-thousand copies its first week in stores, is the week’s best-selling music D-V-D.

1997-Ronnie Lane, co-founder of The Small Faces and The Faces and one-album collaborator with Pete Townshend, dies in a Colorado hospital at the age of 51. He’d battled multiple sclerosis for nearly 20 years.

1996-Metallica play two free shows at Tower Records stores in Northern California. Set up on a flat bed truck, they perform in San Jose in the afternoon, then travel to Sacramento for an evening show.

1992-The “young Elvis” stamp beats out the later “Vegas Elvis” stamp in a U-S Postal Service contest for which more than a million votes were tallied.

1986-Bob Dylan marries his second wife, Carolyn Y. Dennis. The marriage will end in divorce after four years .

1984-Bruce Springsteen’s Born in the U.S.A. album is released. It will spend seven weeks at number-one in Billboard and yield seven Top 10 singles.

1977-Supertramp releases “Give a Little Bit” as a single.

1976-The Sex Pistols’ concert at Lesser Free Trade Hall in Manchester is attended by future members of The Buzzcocks, Joy Division, Pet Shop Boys and The Smiths, all of whom are inspired to form bands. The historic scene is later re-created for the film 24 Hour Party People.

1974-Paul McCartney gets a gold record for “Band on the Run.”

1970-Santana records “Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen.”

1967-With Paul McCartney and George Harrison in the audience, The Jimi Hendrix Experience opens its show at London’s Saville Theater with “Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.”

1965-The Rolling Stones release “Satisfaction.” Carrying the London Records serial number 9766, the single becomes the British band’s first U-S chart-topper.

BIRTHDAYS

Raphael Ravenscroft-Died in 2014
Best known for his solo on Gerry Rafferty’s hit “Baker Street,” the British saxophonist’s many credits also included Pink Floyd, Robert Plant, America, ABBA, Marvin Gaye, Maxine Nightengale and Kim Carnes. He died of a heart attack on October 19th, 2014 at 60.  Born in 1954.

Jimmy McCulloch-Died in 1979
The teenaged guitarist on Thunderclap Newman’s “Something in the Air” joined Paul McCartney’s Wings in 1974 (after Band on the Run was completed). He took part in the Wings Over America tour in ’76 but quit the band a year later, after recording the London Town album. He died September 27th, 1979 of heart failure brought on by drug abuse at 26.  Born in 1953.

Roger Ball-71 years old
Average White Band saxophonist.  Born in 1944.
